Sūtras are the collections of the teachings of the Buddha Sākyamuni (See Gautama Buddha) important to Hīnayāna Buddhism (See Hīnayāna Buddhism). Mahāyāna Buddhism (See Mahāyāna Buddhism) has also made significant use of sūtras, as in the famous Lotus Sūtra (See Lotus of the Good Law, Tendai Sect). In Hinduism (See Hinduism), Sūtras are essentially guides to proper ritual action.
