1910 - 1972
Sultan of Oman from 1932 to 1970.
Saʿid ibn Taymur Al Bu Saʿid was born in Muscat to Sultan Taymur ibn Faysal Al Bu Saʿid and an Al Bu Saʿid mother. Like his father, Saʿid was sent to Baghdad and India for education. Upon his return to Muscat at the age of eighteen, Saʿid effectively was made regent in the absence of his father and succeeded his father in 1932. By the end of World War II, Sultan Saʿid had pulled Oman out of debt and reduced British influence in internal affairs. With British military assistance, he restored Al Bu Saʿid control over the interior in the 1950s. But his paternalistic rule led to growing discontent, especially after the discovery of oil in 1964. A rebellion in the southern province of Dhufar led to Saʿid's overthrow in July 1970 by his son Qabus ibn Saʿid Al Bu Saʿid. Saʿid died in exile in London in October 1972.
