Review

In 1997, Philippine folk-rock group Father & Sons released Saan Ba Ako Nagkamali? (Where Did I Go Wrong?). The group contains three members, who, incidentally, aren't father and sons, but are related: Rico Soliman, who writes most of the songs and plays guitar; drummer Ritchie Soliman; and bassist Ryan Soliman. A guest musician plays keyboards. The music of Father & Sons is distinguished by tight, glistening vocal harmonies, highly reminiscent of the harmonies for which Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young are famous. In addition, Father & Sons' musicianship, most of which is acoustic based, shines throughout the album. The songwriting is distinctive and provides enjoyment. Mostly though, it's the succinct vocal harmonies that attracts notice, as heard on the opening "Awit Para Kay Lolo C. Tatay F. At Sa Apo" (Song for My Grandfather). Several songs are almost easy listening, including the love songs "Saan Ba Ako Nagkamali?" (Where Did I Go Wrong) and "Ikaw Gid Lang" (Only You), but the passionate singing and exquisite harmonies raise their stature. The acoustic guitar dominates the album, but there are several incisive electric guitar solos as well. For example, "Buwitre at Buwaya" (Scavenger Bird and Crocodile), the lyrics of which warn musicians of deceitful music businessmen, features a bluesy electric guitar solo. The keyboards are also prominent on the album, and add tasty riffs. Fathers & Son has an adventurous spirit, and the rollicking "Kaibigan, Lumaban Ka" (Friend, You Fight) is a boogie-woogie tune, led by the boisterous piano. The vocal harmonies heard here and throughout the album are wondrous. The band is obviously comfortable performing together. Father & Sons deserve a second look. ~ David Gonzales, All Music Guide
