[ZAHR; SAHR] Starting high in the Vosges Mountains in France, this tributary of the Mosel River joins the Mosel at the German town of Konz, southwest of the city of Trier. The vineyards, which begin around the tiny German village of Serrig in the south, are part of the Bereich saar-ruwer and Germany's mosel-saar-ruwer region. This is a cold growing region, and in good growing years, the wines of the Saar area can be magnificent-some of Germany's best. In the cooler years when grapes don't fully ripen, much of the crop is used in sekt. The main villages are Ayl, Seerig, Ockfen, and wiltingen which has scharzhofberg the best vineyard in the area. The grosslage Wiltinger Scharzberg covers the vineyards in this area.
