Columbia Encyclopedia: Joseph Sabin
Sabin, Joseph (săb'ĭn), 1821-81, American bibliophile, b. England. Sabin came to the United States in 1848 and established himself as a dealer in rare books in New York City and Philadelphia. He published the American Bibliophilist (1869-75), Bibliography of Bibliography (1877), and Bibliotheca Americana, better known as A Dictionary of Books Relating to America (begun in 1868 and continued by others after his death until 1892).

1868Bibliotecca Americana. The New York antiquarian bookseller produces the first volume, also known as Sabin's Dictionary, of the monumental bibliographical listing of every book and pamphlet in all languages related to America. Sabin would complete his final, fourteenth volume in 1881.
