(1924– )

Japanese architect. He was an early collaborator of Tange, whose influence can be detected at the Kyoto International Conference Hall (1963–6), with its aggressive display of structure, bold modelling of the masses, and an expression of function. However, the repetition of trapezoidal sections—the result of his use of slanting columns and precast wall-panels—did not create the most serene of internal arrangements. Among later works, the Bunkyo Ward Sports Centre, Tokyo (1986), also exploits angles.
