Sachsen-Weimar, a petty Thuringian state (before 1815 Herzogtum, then Großherzogtum) which in the late 18th c. and early 19th c. became famous through the presence at the Weimar court of Goethe, Schiller, Herder, and Wieland under the patronage of the Duke (later Grand Duke) Karl August. The Grand Duchy later acquired Eisenach by inheritance, becoming Großherzogtum Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, simplified by law in 1877 as Großherzogtum Sachsen. In the Weimar Republic it became in 1920 part of Land Thüringen. (See also Anna Amalia, Herzogin.)
