Sadakichi Hartmann
Hartmann, Sadakichi (1867-1944), controversial American dramatist and progressive art critic, born in Japan and brought up in Germany. He was central to the transition from aestheticism to modernism in American art. In 1898 Alfred Stieglitz invited him to write for Camera Notes and, from 1903, Camera Work. Hartmann supported the Photo-Secession's emphasis on individual expression, but criticized photographers' inattention to artistic principles, and pictorialist resistance to modern subject matter. He continued to write on photography under the pseudonym Sidney Allan, and was an important intellectual influence on Stieglitz; they remained lifelong friends.
