Biography

Anna Sahlene is a pop singer and actress from Sweden. Born in Söderhamn in 1976, she was just 11 years old when she first tasted fame on the popular children's television show The Children of Bullerbyn. She later moved to Stockholm to embark on a singing career, joining the band Rhythm Avenue in 1997. The group disbanded after just one year, and Sahlene started taking work as a backing vocalist for singers such as Robyn, Carola, and Charlotte Nilsson. Sahlene appeared on-stage with Nilsson at the 1999 Eurovision song contest, singing backup on Nilsson's winning entry, "Take Me to Your Heaven." In 2000 she released her first solo single, "The Little Voice," which picked up significant airplay throughout Scandinavia. It was later covered by Hilary Duff. Two further singles, "House" and "Fishies," were also successful, but when Sahlene's record company went bankrupt, her debut album, The Fifth Element, was shelved.

Sahlene's fortunes changed in 2002 when she was enlisted at the last moment to return to the Eurovision song contest, this time as an entrant herself. The Estonian singer Ines had dropped out at the last moment, so Sahlene, despite not being Estonian, was called to represent the country with Ines' song "Runaway." Her energetic performance was highly regarded as one of the standouts of the night, and she finished in third place. "Runaway" went on to become a big hit, in Sweden and across Europe. The following year she competed in the Swedish Eurovision heats with "We're Unbreakable," another upbeat pop song with a similar structure to "Runaway." She did not qualify for the finals, but the song was a hit and she finally released her debut album, aptly titled It's Been a While. The album included "Runaway," "We're Unbreakable," and her early hits "The Little Voice" and "House." In addition to success in Europe, the album was a surprise hit in Japan, thanks to heavy airplay for "We're Unbreakable."

In 2005 Photograph was released, sporting a more soulful, piano-based sound. Lead single "The Creeps" saw Anna back in the Swedish charts, and "Photograph" was another modest international success. In 2006 Sahlene competed once again in Melodifestivalen, with the disco-tinged "This Woman." Once again she failed to qualify for the grand finals, but "This Woman" still became her highest-charting Swedish release to date. After a busy 2006 that also included competing on the hugely popular Swedish TV show Let's Dance, Sahlene took much of the next year out of the spotlight to raise her first child, Lily. ~ John Lucas, All Music Guide

Anna Cecilia Sahlin, commonly known as Sahlene, Anna Sahlin or Anna Sahlene, is a singer from Sweden. She was born in the Swedish town of Söderhamn on 11 May 1976. She began her career at the young age of eleven when she had a role in the tv-series "The Children of Noisy Village", based on a story by Astrid Lindgren. Seven years later she moved to Stockholm to start a musical career. She started to sing in a band called Rhythm Avenue.

In 1998 she left Rhythm Avenue to appear as a backing singer for Swedish stars like Eric Gadd, Carola, Robyn and Charlotte Nilsson. This included a slice of the action when Nilsson won the 1999 Eurovision Song Contest in Jerusalem with the song Take Me to Your Heaven.

She returned to the Eurovision Song Contest stage in 2000 as the backing singer for the Maltese entry Desire by Claudette Pace.

Sahlene's first solo single in 2000 was called The Little Voice, as was its title track. Little Voice did not pick up enormous airplay until it was later covered by Hilary Duff in 2004 (although the lyrics are totally different and actually gives the song the totally opposite meaning. For example Anna Sahlin sings: "The little voice in my head won't get out of bed with you." Hilary Duff sings: "The little voice in my head just won't let me get with you").

Three videos were made for the album: Fifth Element; The Little Voice, landing in the top 5 of MTV Nordic’s most played list; and Fishies, filmed on location in Sardinia, Italy. Unfortunately, The Little Voice album was never released due to EMG's buyout of Roadrunner Arcade Music and its eventual fall into bankruptcy.

But this did not mean the end of Sahlene's career. In 2002, Estonia had a problem: since one of their most famous singers, Ines, decided that she did not want to sing the song Runaway in the national pre-selections for the Eurovision Song Contest. Sahlene accepted the offer to sing, and won the national finals. Thus, she once again participated in the Eurovision Song Contest, this time as a principal singer, and she secured third place for Estonia. The song was very successful in the charts, not only in Estonia and Sweden but also in the other Scandinavian and Baltic countries, and even in Switzerland and France.

Most of the tracks from the Little Voice album were released on a new album in April 2003. The album of course also includes Runaway.

She participated in the first semi-final of the Swedish selection 2006, under the name Anna Sahlene, with the song This Woman. However, her fifth-place spot in the semi-final ended her chances of representing her native country.

Anna was one of the contestants on the Swedish TV-show Lets Dance on TV4. Anna was voted off the show, losing to Lasse Brandeby .
