Sayee bai (died 5 September 1659) was the first wife of king Shivaji, and mother of Sambhaji, who succeeded Shivaji as the king.
Sayeebai was the mother of Chhatrapati Sambhaji, but died at an early age. Before marriage her name was Sayee Nimbalkar. Her father was Mudhojirao Nimbalkar. She was married to Chhatrapati Shivaji when she was seven years old and he was eleven years old.She was wheatish in complexion. She was the source of strength and inspiration for Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. There was perfect love between them as long as she lived and even after her death, Shivaji Maharaj sorely missed her. Nothing ever filled the void in his life created by her demise. It is said that her name was the last word out of his mouth when he expired. Had she lived longer, the course of Maratha history would probably have been changed. They had three daughters followed by their son Sambhaji.Their daughter named "Sakhubai"was married to the son of Sayeebai's brother Bajaaji Naik Nimbalkar,to bring him back to Hinduism.Bajaaji was converted to a Muslim by Aurangzeb. She died at the fort Rajgad while Shivaji was making preparations for his meeting with Afzal Khan at Pratapgad. She was ill right from the time she gave birth to Sambhaji. Sambhaji was two years old at the time of her death. He was brought up by Jijabai, the mother of "Chatrapati Shivaji".
