Saint-Germain

1. section of Paris, France, on the Left Bank (S of the Seine). A colorful quarter of narrow streets and cafes, it was the favorite haunt of postwar intellectuals and writers. In recent years it has become increasingly fashionable.
2. church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, in the district. There has been a church on this spot since the 6th century, but the oldest parts of the present church date from the 11th century.
