If you think the only thing US/Canadian cooperation can produce is a hockey team, meet the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC). The US Department of Transportation agency works with its Canadian counterpart to provide a competitive, safe, efficient, secure, and reliable international waterway. The St. Lawrence Seaway reaches more than 2,000 miles from the St. Lawrence River at Montreal to Duluth, Minnesota, on Lake Superior. It includes a series of nearly 20 locks that raise and lower ships from sea level to 590 feet above it and back again. The SLSDC operates the locks, maintains shipping lanes, performs research, and inspects ships. Canada created its agency in 1951, the US in 1954.
