Samantapasadika

Buddhism Dictionary: Samantapāsādikā

Commentary on the Vinaya Piṭaka of the Pāli Canon compiled by Buddhaghoṣa in the 5th century at the request of Buddhasirī. It is prefixed by an introduction, the Bāhira-nidāna, relating the history of Buddhism up to the establishment of the Vinaya Piṭaka in Sri Lanka. It is based on the Mahāpaccarī and the Kurundī-aṭṭhakathā, two older commentaries.

Samantapasadika refers to a collection of Pali commentaries on Theravada Tipitaka Vinaya. It was a translation of Sinhala commentaries into Pali by Buddhaghosa in the 5th century. Many of the verses used in Samanthapasadika are from older Dípavamsa.[1] Samantapasadika is made of with two words : Samanta+Pasadika. Here 'samanta' indicates four directions and 'pasadika' means cool-down.
