History

Community college education in San Diego began in 1914 when the Board of Education of the San Diego City Schools authorized postsecondary classes for San Diego high school students. Classes opened with four faculty members serving 35 students. It was the fourth community college established in California.

Property for a permanent campus was purchased in the early 1950s and construction began on the first buildings. Additional property was added to the campus in the 1970s.
