Coacalco is a city in Mexico State, Mexico. Its official name is Coacalco de Berriozábal municipality and forms part of the Greater Mexico City conurbation. It lies next to the northern tip of the Federal District (Mexico City) in the northeastern part of the state of México.The name "Coacalco" comes from the Nahuatl, meaning "at the house of the snake", and was first recorded in 1320.[1]

The city

Located next to Mexico City, Coacalco's municipality has experienced a trepidant increase in the number of inhabitants (more than 100,000 in the last decade).

Its principal route the Via Jose Lopez Portillo its used as a step among the D.F., and the north zone of the Metropolitan Area.

Coacalco de Berriozábal's economy has changed rapidly in the last 30 years, It switched of being a municipality of agricultural trend, to a city of commercial and industrial importance. The arrival of big groups of persons to the cores of population has provoked that the muncipio leave his farming vocation. At present Coacalco's municipality stands as one of the principal commercial districts of the north of the Metropolitan Area, Coacalco has raised the quality of life of the population because the need from several services, such as hospitals, schools, malls, etc. has turned Coacalco into one of the municipalities with better standard of living into the State of Mexico

In 2005, the city had a population of 285,822 people.[2] For the 2009 the city population is calculated by a number of 313,405

Although both the city and the municipality are both simply called "Coacalco" the municipality's official name includes "de Berriozábal" to honor General Felipe de Berriozábal who signed the order declaring the city a municipality on February 12, 1862.

As municipal seat, Coacalco has jurisdiction over the following communities: El Laurel , Hacienda las Garzas , El Obelisco , Las Dalias , Villa de las Flores , San Francisco Coacalco , El Potrero , Bosques del Valle , Exhacienda San Felipe , Unidad San Rafael , Parque Residencial Coacalco , Villa de las Manzanas , Rancho La Palma, San Lorenzo Tetlixtac among others
