San José State University (SJSU) is located on 154 acres in downtown San José, in the heart of California's Silicon Valley. Its seven colleges offer about 70 bachelor's and 65 master's degree programs. The university says it is the oldest public institution of higher learning on the West Coast. It was founded in San Francisco in 1857 as a teachers' training school known as Minns' Evening Normal School. Five years later, the school came under state control and it moved to San José in 1871.
