History
"Sanmenxia" means "The Gorge of Three Passes."
In Chinese mythology, Yu the Great used a divine axe cutting the mountain ridge three times, creating the Sanmenxia gorges to prevent massive flooding. The three "men" or passes were then named "The Pass of Man 人门", "The Pass of Gods 神门" and "The Pass of Devils 鬼门."
However, with the construction of the Sanmenxia Dam in the 1960's, the ancient passes were destroyed.
During the Western Zhou Dynasty, Sanmenxia was the territory of the State of Guo, ruled by relatives of the ruling Ji Family of Zhou. Guo State moved its capital from modern day Baoji to Shangyang, next to Sanmenxia. Later, this territory was taken by the State of Jin.
Archaeology near Sanmenxia between 1956 and 1991 revealed the mass chariot graves and bronzeware of Guo State rulers.
