An unconsolidated mud formed at the bottom of estuaries, lagoons, lakes, and shallow seas. Sapropel is formed from the decomposition of phyto- and zooplankton, rich in fats and proteins. As the organic content of the plankton decays, hydrocarbons are released, which are thought to be the first stage in the formation of oil and natural gas.
