The Sapulpa Daily Herald gained national media attention in early November 2008 for not reporting the election of Barack Obama as President, instead only writing that John McCain had won Creek County. The omission was met with charges of racism due to the historic nature of the event. The paper maintains that it has a local focus with regard to news events.[6]
Chief Sapulpa, the area's first permanent settler, was a full blood lower Creek Indian of the Kasihta Tribe in Osocheetown, Alabama. In about 1850, he established a trading post near the meeting of Polecat and Rock creeks (about one mile (1.6 km) southeast of present day downtown Sapulpa).
Sapulpa is notable as the home of Frankoma Pottery.
