Who2 Biography: Sarah Chalke, Actor

  • Born: 27 August 1976
  • Birthplace: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
  • Best Known As: The blonde doctor from TV's Scrubs

Canadian-American actress Sarah Chalke plays Dr. Eliot Reid, the loony, toothsome blonde from TV's Scrubs (with Zach Braff). On stage or in front of the camera since childhood, her break in Hollywood came in 1993, when she took over the role of Becky in the sitcom Roseanne. Chalke replaced actress Alicia "Lecy" Goranson as the older daughter of Roseanne Barr and John Goodman in the show's sixth season. Fans called her "Second Becky," and both Chalke and Goranson played the part on and off as a running gag for the remainder of the series (it ended in 1997). The success of Scrubs (2001- present) made Chalke a TV star; while on the show she also appeared on the New York stage and in feature films, including Cake (2005) and Chaos Theory (2007).

She guest-starred in 2008 -- along with pop singer Britney Spears -- in the TV series How I Met Your Mother (with Alyson Hannigan)... She and Braff made TV commercials in 2008 for No Ride Up Panties by Hanes.

Biography

Ottawa-born Sarah Chalke first gained notoriety in 1993 when, at the beginning of the show's sixth season, she was cast on ABC's hit sitcom Roseanne as oldest daughter Becky, a role that had previously been filled by Alicia Goranson, who exited the show for college. Chalke continued to play Becky for two seasons until Goranson returned, but the two actresses took turns playing the character throughout the season. Goranson left again before the show's ninth and final season, and Chalke resumed the role full-time.

Following the end of Roseanne, Chalke took on a role in the Canadian series Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy. While that show only lasted nine episodes, it would only be a couple more years before the actress found herself on another hit series. In 2001, she was cast as Elliot Reid, the female lead opposite Zach Braff on the cult hit NBC medical comedy Scrubs.

In addition to her series television work, Chalke has acted in a number of made-for-TV movies and small independent films over the years. In 2007 she had her first role in a high-profile Hollywood movie with a supporting turn alongside Jon Heder and Diane Keaton in the comedy Mama's Boy. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Early life

Chalke was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is the middle of the three daughters of Douglas and Angie Chalke. Her mother is originally from Rostock, Germany. According to a Scrubs commentary track, she used to attend the German school in her hometown twice a week. Her first language is English, although she speaks French fairly well and German fluently. Chalke graduated from Handsworth Secondary School in North Vancouver in 1994.

Her father is a lawyer in private practice in Vancouver. Her parents operate an adoption agency that specializes in placing foreign orphans (primarily Chinese) with Canadian families. Her older sister Natasha is also a lawyer, and she has a younger sister named Piper. In April 2008 Chalke became a naturalized American citizen. She is engaged to Jamie Afifi, an attorney whom she met while snowboarding.[2]

Acting career

Chalke's acting career began at the age of eight when she began appearing in musical theater productions. At 12, she became a reporter on the Canadian children's show KidZone. In 1993, she took over the role of Becky (Conner) Healy on Roseanne from Lecy Goranson; she made a cameo appearance as a different character in the Roseanne episode "Halloween: The Final Chapter" (#178, originally aired October 31, 1995). She returned briefly to Canada where she starred in the CBC Television drama Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy (1998-1999).

In 2001, she was cast as Dr. Elliot Reid in the NBC comedy series Scrubs. She has appeared in several feature films, including Ernest Goes to School and Cake, as well as several episodes of How I Met Your Mother. She appeared in Channel 101's The 'Bu with The Lonely Island, a parody of the hit show The O.C., but was credited as Pamela Fenton. In 2007, she appeared as a supporting character in Chaos Theory, which starred Ryan Reynolds. In 2008, Chalke became the spokesperson for a line of women's underwear by Hanes that included a series of commercials directed by her Scrubs co-star Zach Braff.[3][4]

Activism

Chalke lost her aunt and grandmother to breast cancer that was undiagnosed while in its early stages. Chalke has since encouraged breast cancer detection and prevention, and starred in the Lifetime movie Why I Wore Lipstick To My Mastectomy.[5] She is an ambassador for the Audrey Hepburn Children's Foundation. Chalke also made an appearance in a short video lampooning the National Organisation for Marriage's anti-gay marriage public service announcement.[6]
