Biography

While she may not have envisioned it early on, Sarah Lee Guthrie, the daughter of Arlo Guthrie and granddaughter of Woody Guthrie, ended up answering the call of family tradition, releasing her self-titled debut on the family-owned Rising Son Records in 2001. Careful observers will notice that her first recorded appearance was as a toddler vocalist on dad's 1981 album Power of Love. As an adolescent, she would also sing with her dad on the Grammy-nominated children's album Woody's 20 Grow Big Songs. In high school, however, she was more prone to listening to punk albums than thinking about a career as a folksinger. Nevertheless, she spent the years directly after high school on the road with Arlo, initially as road manager and then as part of the band. Her live debut was with family and friends at Carnegie Hall. In 1997, she met her future husband, Johnny Irion, once a member of North Carolina alt rockers Queen Sarah Saturday (as well as one-time touring member of Dillon Fence). In 1999, Sarah Lee teamed up with Irion and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger to form the folk trio RIG (Rodriguez, Irion, and Guthrie). In 2001, besides releasing respective solo albums, Guthrie and Irion toured extensively as a duo, and in 2004, they entered the studio to record an album together. Produced in part by Gary Louris of the Jayhawks and featuring a number of alt-country luminaries lending support, Guthrie and Irion's Exploration was released by the roots-friendly Yep Roc label in the spring of 2005, followed by Go Waggaloo on Smithsonian in 2009. ~ Erik Hage, All Music Guide

Sarah Lee Guthrie (born February 17, 1979(1979-02-17)) is an American singer-songwriter.

Guthrie was born in Massachusetts, the youngest daughter of folksinger Arlo Guthrie and the granddaughter of Woody Guthrie. Guthrie released her first self-titled album on the family's Rising Son Records in 2002. As a child she was involved in theater and dance. Her first recorded appearance was as a vocalist on her father's 1981 album Power of Love. Her interest in music was sparked when she worked as her father's road manager on the 1997 Further Festival tour. She picked up an acoustic guitar and started playing as a way to join in on the fun. "I always wrote poems, so it wasn't that far off for me to turn that into songs."[1]

"My dad was absolutely thrilled, of course, and would teach me stuff every day when we were on the road together. That was a really cool way to get to know my dad, because I'd never known him that way. And that's another thing that made it easy: my dad was so supportive."[2]

Her live debut was with family and friends at Carnegie Hall. In 1997, she met her future husband, Johnny Irion. Guthrie and Irion were married on October 16, 1999.[3] and began performing together as Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion in the fall of 2000.

Go Waggaloo, their first children's CD, was released in October 2009 on the Smithsonian Folkways label. Sarah Lee Guthrie is joined by Irion and their two daughters, as well as numerous friends and family members including Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger. The album includes three songs featuring lyrics by Woody Guthrie never before put to music and eight songs written by Sarah Lee and family.[4]
