Sarah-Louise Grimshaw (nèe Tilsley; previously Platt) is a fictional character on the UK soap opera Coronation Street. She was last played by Tina O'Brien, although two other actresses have also portrayed her.

Tina O'Brien arrived on the show in 1999, replacing Lyndsey King, who had played the character from 1987, as a baby, until she was twelve, sharing it with her twin sister, Leah. In May 1987, Leah died from cot death. Tina O'Brien took the torch from Lyndsey King when she was 16, playing the character who was still only 12 at the time. Sarah was quite a feminine, gossiping character and very close to her family. She also has a nasty streak, which became evident when she 'stole' Jason Grimshaw from his then girlfriend Violet Wilson. She left the street in December 2007, with her daughter Bethany. Sarah's voice was heard on 4 January 2008 when she left a message on the Grimshaws' answering machine. She was also heard on 6 January 2008, leaving another message on the Grimshaws' answering machine asking Jason to join her and Bethany in Milan.

Character Overview

Development

Teenage Years

When she was born, Gail named her daughter Sarah-Louise, and she grew into a sweet innocent little girl. Sarah-Lou had very trivial storylines until 1996, at age nine, when she collapsed after her appendix ruptured. At that time, she was just a subject to the breakdown of Martin and Gail's marriage. Then, in a storyline that broke a serious social taboo, Sarah-Lou discovered she was pregnant at age 12 in early 2000. The storyline, which developed over the first half of 2000, showed Sarah-Lou struggle with coming to terms with her pregnancy and being shunned by Neil Ferns (the father of the child). Then in June 2000 she gave birth to her daughter, Bethany. This triggered Sarah-Lou's change from innocent girl to troublesome teen, including dropping her second first name and just being known as Sarah. In 2001, she grew fed up of looking after Bethany and missing out on doing what all other teenage girls were doing, and she decided to try to find love and friendship via the internet. In July 2001 she arranged to meet a guy called 'James' who was 16; however, when she arrived it turned out to be a man in his forties. Sarah managed to get out alive with the help of friend Candice and ex-boyfriend Todd. Sarah still rebelled against her parents and let her mother take care of Bethany while she had fun. Then, in 2002, she started a relationship with the older jailbird Ade Critchley. Their relationship was volatile, with Sarah lusting after him. In November 2002 they went for a joyride in Ken Barlow's car and crashed. Ade left Sarah for dead, and she spent weeks in hospital. This triggered her change, and in March 2003 her mother's psychotic husband Richard Hillman took her, her brother David, and daughter Bethany in a car and drove them into the canal. Sarah, Gail, David, and Beth got out alive, and Richard died.

Relationships with Todd and Jason Grimshaw

Then in June 2003 she started a relationship with Todd Grimshaw who idolised her and even ditched his A-Levels for her. They bought a flat together in October 2003, which her mother Gail disapproved of and to her horror, Sarah became pregnant with Todd's child in December 2003 age 16. Gail told her daughter to abort the child as being tied down with two children age 17 was a big mistake. Sarah rebelled however and after celebrating her 17th birthday in January 2004, Todd proposed. However, he had been fighting his feelings for a while and started an affair with nurse Karl Foster. It was Sarah's brother Nick who broke the news to her in May 2004 that Todd was gay. She threw Todd out and a few days later went into labour three months early after her placenta had become disattached. Todd was desperate to see his son but Sarah wouldn't let him and she gave birth to Billy Platt on June 1, 2004 but he died the day after. Then on Christmas Eve 2004, Todd walked in on Jason and Sarah having sex and promptly left Weatherfield. Sarah and Jason's relationship was rocky and they split up numerous times and eventually, Jason proposed to Sarah in February 2006. However, their money troubles didn't help and Sarah had to buy her wedding dress from a charity shop. When the wedding dawned in August 2006, Sarah and Jason were set to wed but Jason left Sarah at the altar and sent her a text saying: Sorry, can't do it. Love J x. Sarah was heartbroken but in December 2006 she and Jason resumed their relationship. Jason proposed again in March 2007 and this time Sarah's brother David took a grudge, he enjoyed seeing Sarah suffer and caused many problems for them. This included befriending Jason and then lying to him while making death threats to his family. Then in September 2007 he was hiding ecstasy pills for his friend Daryl Morton and Sarah's daughter Bethany found them and took one. David was scared as he had never intended for his niece to take one and when Sarah returned she started to fit and they took her to the hospital where David's deeds were exposed. He was outcast from the family and banned from the wedding. So in early October 2007 he loosened the bolts on the railings at the Builder's Yard and Jason fell breaking his leg.

Relationship with David Platt

Sarah's relationship with her younger brother, David was very strained. David has continued to make the family's life hell, sending cards from Richard Hillman, leaving ecstasy in Bethany Platt's doll and various attempts to sabotage Sarah's plans with Jason. Sarah occasionally would get revenge on David, such as when she informed his love interest, Mel, of his "psychotic" past. For her last years on the street, Sarah and David would often have physical fights or ignore each other completely. Eventually, after David faked his suicide on her wedding day, Gail told Sarah she needed to leave home, as the siblings could no longer live under the same roof. In 2006, the family had to go through family counselling. Here Sarah said if she could have anything, she'd have David "either behave, or go and live somewhere else.". Sarah was often the first to blame David when nobody else would, such as when Jason fell from some scaffolding. In 2007, David sabotaged Sarah's plans for Jason to move in with them, although he was later given permission under the circumstances that he "kept an eye on David". David later confessed to Jason that he fantasised over murdering Audrey Roberts, Gail Platt and Sarah. Things hit rot bottom for the siblings in 2008 when her daughter Bethany nearly died from swallowing one of David's ecstasy tablets, and Sarah quipped "he means nothing to me." When David wrote a suicide note in 2008, Sarah tore it up and threw it away, deciding it was a trick. When David turned up alive, Sarah was held in the bad light and Audrey warned her that she should "show him a little more concern". Sarah later claimed she "wishes he was dead.", often remarking that she "wishes he HAD killed himself."

Wedding and Departure

Sarah and Jason's wedding day dawned on October 31, 2007 and they managed to get married just after the police burst into the wedding informing them of David's attempted suicide. Sarah and Jason went on their honeymoon to the Lake District but it was cut short when they returned home due to David wanting 'forgiveness'. Sarah wasn't finished however, when her uncle Stephen Reid came over from Canada in December 2007, he was planning to move to Milan with David, however Sarah and Jason saw the opportunity and Sarah planted drugs in David's drawer in the salon which their grandmother Audrey found. This prompted Stephen to move with Sarah, Jason and Bethany instead. So the three of them got to the train station on December 30, 2007 where Sarah told Jason where the drugs had come from and Jason was appaled prompting her to leave for Milan with Bethany.

Storylines

Early Plots

Sarah, previously informally known as Sarah-Lou, is the only daughter of Brian Tilsley and Gail Tilsley. Questions were raised about whether Brian was Sarah's father and, at the time, it was quite a scandal. When Brian found out Gail was having an affair with his cousin, he told her to have an abortion but she refused. Brian rejected baby Sarah, thinking she wasn't his daughter. Even after a blood test revealed he was her father, he still refused to have any contact with her and only reconciled with Gail after kidnapping her older brother, Nick. He was murdered just two weeks after her second birthday, and she was adopted by her beloved stepfather Martin. Sarah always acknowledged Martin as her father, even though she always called him by his first name.

Teenage pregnancy

When it came to men, Sarah was very unlucky. In February 2000, just after her 13th birthday, Sarah found out she was pregnant. Her daughter Bethany was born four months later.

Neil Fearns reveals to Sarah he doesn't want anything to do with her or the baby. (2000)

The father, Neil Ferns, had no interest in Bethany and was always an "absent father". However, in late 2003, after Neil died in a car crash, Bethany's paternal grandmother, Brenda Ferns, established contact after Sarah took Bethany to Neil's funeral. This nearly led to Bethany's death, as Brenda planned to commit suicide with Bethany, fearing Bethany was being brought up in a house of sin; Emily Bishop, however, found them in time and stopped Brenda. Brenda was then taken away in an ambulance, the audience were left to believe she was mentally ill.

Car crash

Sarah is left to die after the crash.(2002)

During autumn 2002, Sarah became very rebellious. She dumped her sensible boyfriend Todd Grimshaw and started dating bad-boy, Aiden Critchley, who was also dating her best friend, Candice. Then, one night when her mother and Richard were on holiday, Sarah told Audrey that she was going to see her friend - but she was really going to see Aiden. He was driving her neighbour's (Ken Barlow's) car and took her on a high-speed joyride, deliberately speeding past speed cameras in order to add more points to Ken's licence and get him banned from driving. However, Sarah quickly lost interest in Aiden's adventure and tried to get out of the car, causing a near fatal crash. Sarah narrowly survived but the crash left her in a coma with serious head injuries but it made her realise just how much Bethany meant to her. Sarah ended her relationship with Aiden, disgusted that he had left her to die in the wreckage.

Aiden reappeared in January 2003 and was living rough in a disused building after his abusive father had kicked him out, following his part in the car crash. Sarah felt sorry for him and started taking him food every day, though the pair were no longer romantically involved. Sarah was devastated in February when she discovered that her new stepfather, Richard Hillman, was a killer and had tried to frame Aiden for murdering Maxine Peacock. A month later, Sarah and Bethany narrowly survived when Hillman drove them, Gail and David (all bound and gagged), into a canal. Richard drowned but the others survived. Aiden was cleared of murder and released from custody, but has never been seen or heard from since.

Relationship with Todd Grimshaw

Sarah attacks Todd after he reveals he is gay. (2004)

Sarah rekindled her relationship with Todd Grimshaw in early 2003 after refusing his advances for months and, to her mother's horror, became pregnant again in late 2003 at the age of 16. She was unsure at first about whether she would have the baby but was persuaded by Todd's persistence. Todd seemed dead set on making it work for him and Sarah and even dropped out of school in order to spend more time with his new family. For this reason amongst others [Sarah sleeping with Jason to spite Todd], Sarah found herself an enemy in Eileen Grimshaw. Sarah left home to live with Todd and fell out with her mother after she reported them to Social Services for child neglect. Against the wishes of their families, they got engaged and Sarah and her mother finally reconciled. Unfortunately, in an unforeseen twist, Todd was wrestling against his homosexual feelings and started an affair with a man behind Sarah's back.

Sarah refused to listen to her brother Nick when he told her Todd was gay after Todd made a pass at him and after Todd confessed, Sarah went home where she suffered a placental abruption, meaning she needed an emergency caesarean, in May 2004. Fortunately she was fine but the baby, Billy, died soon after birth. Sarah blamed Todd for Billy's death and refused to allow him to attend their son's funeral. In August 2004, she got her revenge by sleeping with Todd's brother which led her to be alienated by her best friend who had an on/off relationship with Jason and everyone around her for a short time and Todd's departure from Weatherfield.

First Marriage to Jason

Sarah grieves at Billy`s coffin. (2004)

Sarah dated Asian skip man, Scooter Makuna, briefly in 2005 before setting her sights again on Jason Grimshaw, despite the fact that Jason was dating Violet Wilson. Sarah revealed her darker side, stealing Jason without a thought for Violet. The two became engaged in March 2006, but just like Sarah's engagement to Todd Grimshaw, their families opposed the marriage. However, just as everyone had started to accept the marriage, Jason got cold feet on their wedding day, sending a heart-broken and humiliated Sarah a text message at the altar, calling it off.

Reconciliation with Jason

Eileen slaps Jason after their announcement. (2006)

Soon after leaving Sarah at the altar, Jason returned. He claimed to have realised that he made a big mistake but Sarah declared their relationship was well and truly over. Trying to change Sarah's mind, he put posters up everywhere, declaring his undying love. Eventually Sarah warmed to Jason again, and they began dating again.

When Jason suddenly discovered he had a baby daughter, Holly, on Christmas Day 2006 from a one night stand a year before, he told Sarah that he wanted nothing to do with the child. This angered Sarah as she felt that he was acting exactly as Neil Ferns had acted when she had Bethany. He saw that he could use Holly to get closer to Sarah, and Sarah said they, meaning Jason, Sarah, Bethany and Holly, could be a family. Unfortunately Holly's mother returned and revealed that Charlie Stubbs was in fact Holly's real dad. Eileen was devastated and was eventually persuaded by Gail, to return Holly to her mother.

After going on holiday with her daughter Bethany, Jason and Sarah returned refreshed and announced in July 2007 that they were engaged again. She asked Maria Sutherland if she would be her maid of honour again.

On 17 September 2007, David was looking after Bethany, who was not at school due to a gas leak. David went outside to chat with Darryl. When he came back, he realized Bethany had swallowed an ecstasy tablet which David had hidden for Darryl inside her doll. Bethany started

to slow down and became drowsy within minutes. David made her vomit by drinking salt water to clear her system. Sarah returned and noticed that Bethany was feeling unwell and thought it was a bug. David became increasingly anxious and started to panic. Bethany had a seizure, and David called an ambulance. At the hospital, the doctors battled to save her but didn't know exactly what was wrong. David eventually confessed to a horrified Jason that she had swallowed Ecstasy. Jason then told the rest of the Platts, who were mortified. That episode ended with David sitting at home by himself, sobbing.

David planned to ruin Sarah's wedding to Jason starting with inviting Todd to it and Jason's stag night. This plan didn't work as Sarah and Todd decided to call a truce, leaving David miserable.

The Wedding Day and departure

On 31 October 2007, Sarah and Jason were to marry again. However, Sarah's brother, David, was true to his suicide note and drove his car into the canal.

The police, who had already been informed of his disappearance, turned up at the church during the vows to tell the distraught mother Gail Platt and the family, that the son's car had been seen driving into the canal by an on-looker.

However, Jason and Sarah went ahead with their wedding, believing it to be another of David's hoaxes. However when it was revealed that, in fact it was David's car, Sarah and the remaining Platt family waited at home for news. The doorbell rang and as Sarah answered it, she was greeted by a sodden David. He was alive and planning more evil.

Sarah got revenge by planting Ecstasy she had bought from a customer she was serving at Vallendros. She planted the drug in David's drawer in the salon, which Audrey later discovered. Audrey told Gail and she told Stephen. Stephen decided that perhaps David should not go to Milan as he could not behave. Scheming Sarah was delighted when Stephen offered her, Jason and Bethany the opportunity to go to Milan.

Sarah leaves for Milan with Bethany.(2007)

Sarah deliberately wound up David about the job and her new life in Milan.

On 30 December 2007, Sarah and Jason left for Milan with Bethany. At Piccadilly station, Sarah told Jason about planting drugs on David and was proud that she had done so. Jason was disgusted and walked away, leaving Sarah to fly to Milan alone with Bethany. He then returned to № 8 and told Gail and David about Sarah's confession. David demanded an apology from Gail and Jason left.

Meanwhile, at the airport, Sarah was waiting for Jason to return but the plane announcer called her and Bethany to the plane as it was ready to leave. She was last seen walking to the plane and her new life. Sarah has been mentioned various times after this date and has been heard on an answerphone. She has also been criticised for going and not replying to messages. Jason visited her and Beth, in an attempt to patch up their marriage, but Jason confessed to sleeping with Becky and Sarah declared their marriage was over.

References after Departure

Gail temporarily left the street to visit Sarah and Bethany in June 2008, but returned to the street in July.

Sarah began to get in contact with her family and her family passed on the news to Jason that she was finding life difficult in Milan after her Italian boyfriend had decided to dump her. It looked for some time as if Sarah might be coming back to the street and so Jason and Becky terminated their relationship. However Sarah again rang her family and confirmed that she was back with her ex- boyfriend and that there was no chance of a reconciliation with Jason.[1].

Audrey and Gail visited Sarah in May 2009 for Bethany's 9th Birthday but returned in early June after the news that Sarah's grandfather Ted had suffered a heart attack.

Rumoured returns

In July 2009, it was said that she was thinking about returning to the show.[2]. In September 2009, she said that she would not be returning any time soon.[3]
