Sarapul (sərä'pūl), city (1989 pop. 110,000), E European Russia, in the Udmurt Republic, on the Kama River. It is a rail junction on the Moscow-Yekaterinburg line. Industries include food processing, machine tools, radio equipment, steel, and aircraft parts. Founded in the late 16th cent., Sarapul was devastated in the Pugachev rebellion of 1773. During the early 19th cent. it served as a trade center on the route to Siberia.

Sarapul (Russian: Сарапул) is a city and a river port in the Republic of Udmurtia, Russia, located on the right bank of the Kama River, 66 kilometers (41 mi) south-east of Izhevsk. Population: 103,141 (2002 Census);[3] 110,381 (1989 Census).[4]

It was first mentioned in 1596 as the village (selo) of Voznesenskoye (Вознесе́нское), also known as Sarapul. In 1780, it was granted town status and by the end of the 18th century grew into a merchant town with developed industry of footwear manufacturing.

Presently, Sarapul is the second most significant industrial town in Udmurtia (after Izhevsk).

Honours

The asteroid 26851 Sarapul was named in the city's honour on 1 June 2007.[5]
