Scarborough is a western suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Stirling. Its post code is 6019.
It is approximately 14 km by road northwest of central Perth. Scarborough is a melting pot with Homeswest homes next to opulent homes. The most prestigious areas are Alga Street, Hastings Street, Lewin Way, Peasholm Street and newly created Bella Vista. Nearby suburbs include Doubleview to the east, Trigg to the north, and City Beach and Wembley Downs to the south.
It has a population of about 12,000 people (2001 census), of whom about 25% were born overseas. Of those, most were born in the United Kingdom; only a small percentage were born in non-English speaking countries.
A coastal suburb named after the English beach resort Scarborough, it currently has the only high-rise five-star resort on the Western Australian coastline, the Rendezvous Hotel Observation City, built in 1986 for Alan Bond.
Scarborough is often spelt 'Scarboro' by local residents, one particular example being the Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club (SSLSC). Scarborough Beach is one of Perth's most popular beaches, popular with sun-worshippers and surfers alike, although the popular consensus is that Scarborough's waves are poor.
Scarborough beach is also home to the Australian national lifesaving competetion (Aussie's) for the years 2007, 2008 and 2009 which is sure to produce massive spending in the area which will produce big profits for local shops.
Along the beach front are many cafes, fast-food restaurants and a couple of pubs. There is also a large Coles supermarket.
Amendment 457 of the council's town planning scheme was passed in 2006 [1] [2]), to allow high-rise development on Scarborough Beach. The state government has approved a height limit of eight storeys (March 2006).
