German family of organ builders. Jakob (d 1754 or later) was active 1538-70. His son Hans the elder (d 1611), the most important member of the family, assisted him from 1541, and his grandson Hans the younger (fl c 1600-1631) was responsible for the most mature examples of the famous ‘Hamburg organ front’ (introduced at St Jakobi, Hamburg, in 1576). They successfully combined features of the early Hamburg organ, the Brabant organ and the central German instrument. Examples survive in Tangermünde and Lübeck.
