Schools Act (Scotland), 1696. In 1616 the Scottish Privy Council decreed that in Scotland a school should be established in every parish. This was ratified by the Scottish Parliament in 1633 and a further Act for Founding Schools passed in 1646. It was a further 200 years before a similar system was established in England.
