Review

"Unbelievable" was so insanely infectious that many who were introduced to EMF by that single went out and purchased Schubert Dip in the hope that the rest of the album would be equally strong. But unfortunately, most of the CD fell short of "Unbelievable"'s excellence. This isn't to say that Schubert Dip is a bad album -- far from it, in fact. But weighed against "Unbelievable"'s dizzying infectiousness, distinctly British dance/rock/pop offerings like "Girl of an Age," "Children," and the follow-up single "Lies" are fairly catchy, but nonetheless mildly disappointing. The only song that comes close to packing the punch of "Unbelievable" is the intoxicating "Long Summer Days." For the most part, Schubert Dip is a prime example of an album that is simply decent when it should have been excellent. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Notes

  • The album contains a large number of samples used to introduce songs.
  • "Unbelievable" is their best known single. The song includes samples of US comedian Andrew Dice Clay throughout the track.
  • The song "Lies" originally contained a sample of the voice of John Lennon's assassin, Mark David Chapman, reciting the lyrics to Lennon's "Watching the Wheels." There was controversy over this from Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, who objected to this sample. As a result, all pressings of Schubert Dip since then have omitted the sample of Chapman's voice.
  • The song "Girl of an Age" contains a sample of the character Ernie from Sesame Street speaking to his friend Bert.
  • The song "Longtime" contains a sample of a reading of The Hollow Men by T. S. Eliot.
  • An uncredited bonus track, previously on the b-side of "Unbelievable," titled "EMF" appears on the Parlophone version of the album after "Longtime." The song contains a sample of the Von Trapp children from The Sound of Music film.
  • The song "Children" was used as the theme song for the New Zealand music show Pepsi RTR Countdown in the '90s.
