A scientific instrument is an apparatus or equipment used to collect data in a scientific domain.
The scientific instruments are part of a laboratory equipment, but are considered larger or more sophisticated than other measuring instruments. It is coupled with any kind of data logger, which is more and more often a computer. It can also be an integrated part of a laboratory information management system (LIMS).
Some scientific instruments can be quite large in size, like the large particles colliders or the radiotelescope antennas used in physics.
Scientific instruments can be found on board sounding rockets, satellites or planetary rovers and controlled by radiotelecommunication.
