The Scientology Parishioners League, is an organization self-described as "composed of Scientologists in good standing with Churches of Scientology", and working on a volunteer basis on issues like the media, writing, marketing, public relations, fundraising, and legislation. [1]
Their application for volunteers specifically seeks people with experience in "debunking rumors", and asks "What is your familiarity with the internet?" [2]
Activities
In 2005 the League responded to allegations by David Rice regarding L. Ron Hubbard's naval service. Rice had attacked the legitimacy of Hubbard's military career and urged a 'Stolen Valor Act'. The League maintained that Hubbard's Notice of Separation from the U.S. Navy indicates he was awarded 21 medals and palms for service during World War II. [3]
Tory Christman
Tory Christman, once an Operating Thetan Level 7 (OTVII) but now a leading Scientology critic, was appointed to head the League by Office of Special Affairs vice president Janet Weiland in 2000. According to NewTimes Los Angeles, Christman's job was to and to "pressure television networks, radio stations and newspapers to drop negative content about the church". She also monitored the internet for anti-Scientology material from so-called Suppressive persons and "Potential Trouble Sources". It was through Christman's interaction with the public and the internet during her time at the League that she became aware of Scientology controversies, which ultimately led to her disillusionment with the Church.
