Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg (born Christopher Scott Kannberg, August 30, 1966 in Stockton, California)[1] is a former guitarist of the influential 1990s indie-rock band Pavement; he is also a childhood friend of lead singer Stephen Malkmus. Kannberg is from Stockton, California (where he met Stephen Malkmus). He contributed an average of about two songs per album during the band's career. He currently has his own band called Preston School of Industry on Matador Records. Among his noted influences are The Velvet Underground, Echo & the Bunnymen and the Philadelphia based band, Hot Words .[citation needed] His nickname "Spiral Stairs" was originally used to create mystery about the band, similarly to how Stephen Malkmus went under the name SM, as is noted on the Slanted and Enchanted artwork. He released his first ever solo album under the name Spiral Stairs on October 20, 2009 through Matador Records. It is titled "The Real Feel" and features appearances from the Preston School of Industry and many other session musicians.
