The Scottish Social Services Council is responsible for raising standards in the Scottish social service workforce.
The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) are responsible for the registration, regulation education and training of social service workers which include Qualified Social Workers, Social Work Students, Support Workers of all grades and levels including those who work in a Managerial capacity.
Under the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001, the Scottish Social Services Council assumed responsibility for the role of TOPSS Scotland (the Training Organisation for the Personal Social Services).
These responsibilities include:-
Identifying the numbers of social workers and social service workers required; Determining the education and training requirements of the workforce; Drawing up national occupational standards;
Addressing the challenge of recruitment and retention of social service workers. [1]

Social Service Workers are a collectional name for a workforce who comprise of Support Assistants; Support Workers; Project Workers; Team Leaders; Service Managers; Residential Child Care Workers; and Nursery Nurses.
Each of these areas can refer to themselves as a Social Service Worker as well as their employer/company title.
When each member registers as a Social Service Worker, they may also refer to their title as Registered Social Service Worker (RSSW).
