The precursor to SCPIE Holdings, Inc., was Southern California Physician Insurance Exchange (SCPIE), which was founded in 1976 in the wake of extraordinary malpractice insurance premium hikes in California. SCPIE Holdings, Inc., was organized in 1997 and served as a parent company to various subsidiaries, including SCPIE.
Through its subsidiaries, SCPIE Holdings, Inc., primarily provided medical malpractice insurance and related products in California and Delaware. The company underwrote physician and medical group professional liability, healthcare provider and facility liability, and ancillary liability products for physicians, physician medical groups and clinics, managed care organizations, and other providers in the healthcare industry.
With over 10,000 policyholders, SCPIE Holdings, Inc., was one of the leading carriers of professional liability insurance in California.
In March 2008, SCPIE shareholders agreed to sell the company to The Doctors Company.[1]
