herpes gladiatorum
A highly contagious skin disease, usually caused by the herpes simplex virus. Scrumpox is commonly associated with rugby football where the combination of skin lesions and the abrasive effects of facial stubble during scrumming facilitates transmission of the infection. Transmission may also occur through shared towels and equipment. Creams or tablets containing acyclovir, a specific antiviral agent, are used to treat the condition. Scrumpox may also be caused by bacteria (Streptococcus pyogenes or Staphylococcus aureus) or fungi, in which case antibacterial or antifungal creams or tablets are used in the treatment.
