  • The Irish name, "Scully" comes from older forms Ó Scalaidhe, O'Scolaidhe, and O'Scolaighe. These surnames referred to an ancestor who functioned a sceulaidhe, a high-ranking storyteller of the old Irish court, or "a student".[1] [1] Other early modern forms of the surname include Scally, Skelly, Skellie, Skealley, McScaly, and Mac-an-Skealy. [2]
  • Scully (though more often skully) is a word used in some parts of Scotland and the northeast of England to mean bald[citation needed].
e.g. "He's gettin' skully." ("He's going bald.")
