Se'Udah Shelishit

Encyclopedia of Judaism: Se'Udah Shelishit

("third meal"). The third of the three obligatory Sabbath meals (see Se'Udah). It is also known as shalosh se'udot. The meal is generally eaten after the Afternoon Service on Saturday. At each of the meals of the Sabbath, the blessing on bread must be on two whole loaves, but unlike the first two meals of the Sabbath, this meal is not preceded by the sanctification (Kiddush). The table melodies sung are generally slow and of a somewhat solemn nature, as the day fades into night and the sacred Sabbath gives way to a regular weekday.
