Plot

Sea of Love is a sexy, atmospheric thriller, very much in the style of Alfred Hitchcock, with involving characters, steamy love scenes, and surprising plot twists. Frank Keller (Al Pacino), is a lonely, tired, disillusioned, police detective, who has a problem with alcohol. Frank is investigating a serial killer, whom he believes finds victims by using personal ads in magazines, killing them while playing the old record "Sea of Love." In a scene both amusing and touching, Frank and his partner, Sherman (John Goodman) --aided by Frank's father (William Hickey in a lovely cameo) place a personal ad, hoping to lure the killer. Helen Cruger (Ellen Barkin), a tough, sexy single mother answers the ad and begins an affair with Frank, despite the fact that she is one of the prime suspects in the case. The suspense builds as Frank, though deeply drawn to Helen, becomes more and more suspicious of her. In a splendidly crafted script from Richard Price, the plot is compelling, with plenty of action, terrific authentic dialogue and superb characterization. Ellen Barkin gives a marvelous performance as an independent, sensual and intriguing femme fatale; John Goodman is excellent as Sherman, giving a likable, shrewd, and subtly comic performance; and Pacino, in perhaps his best performance since Dog Day Afternoon, plays Frank as a man on the edge, reckless and self-destructive, lost and alone. Frank falls in love with Helen, in spite of himself, because of his loneliness and need. Pacino's skill in showing the vulnerability and neediness of Frank explains the somewhat implausible actions of his character in continuing their affair despite the mounting evidence against Helen. Harold Becker directs with great flair, bringing the story believability, without lapsing into false sentimentality. ~ Linda Rasmussen, All Movie Guide

Review

This high-quality contemporary film noir depends primarily on the skills of Al Pacino, who delivers a comeback performance as the desperate cop falling for one of his suspects. Pacino had appeared on screen only once since Scarface -- in 1985's flop Revolution -- and Sea of Love was widely considered some of his best work since the mid-1970s. As the femme fatale, Ellen Barkin charges the movie with sexual energy and anguish. Based on his novel Ladies' Man, Richard Price's screenplay is by turns funny, suspenseful, and melancholic as it pays homage to the classic film noir structure. The material is perfectly suited not only to Pacino's performance but also to the appropriately pallid cinematography of Ronnie Taylor. ~ Brendon Hanley, All Movie Guide

IMDb profile

Sea of Love is a 1989 drama about New York City detective Frank Keller trying to catch a serial killer who finds victims through the lonely hearts column in newspapers. It stars Al Pacino, Ellen Barkin, and John Goodman.

The movie was written by Richard Price. It was directed by Harold Becker. It is credited as the film that pulled Pacino out of his slump of film failures that occupied much of the 1980s.

Plot summary

New York Police detective Frank Keller (Al Pacino) investigates the murder of a man in Manhattan, shot dead while face down naked in his bed while listening to a 45rpm recording of "Sea of Love". Keller has three clues - a lipstick-smeared cigarette, a wanted ad the dead man placed in a newspaper and a perfect set of fingerprints. Immediate suspicion falls on a vengeful woman who answered his lonely hearts ad.

A second man dies in the same manner in Queens. Detective Sherman Touhey (John Goodman) suggests they collaborate. Both victims had put rhyming ads in the paper. They track down Raymond Brown (Michael O'Neill) the only other man with a rhyming ad. He's a married man and admits placing the ad but swears on his children's lives that he threw away all the letters and never saw anyone.

Keller has an idea - place their own rhyming ad in the paper, take any women who respond to a restaurant and take the prints from their glasses. Keller's boss (John Spencer) thinks it is a bad idea. However, Raymond Brown soon turns up dead.

Keller has dinner with several women while Sherman — posing as a waiter — puts their empty glasses into evidence bags. But one of the women, Helen Cruger (Ellen Barkin) snubs Keller and leaves before she takes a drink. Keller bumps into her again at a market and she is more friendly. He goes back to her place, ostensibly to get her prints. He panics when he finds a gun in her purse, but it turns up to be just a starting pistol.

Keller and Helen begin a serious relationship. Keller gets her prints on a glass but decides to wipe the glass clean. Their relationship proves rocky when Helen discovers that Keller is a cop.

Helen's ex-husband Terry (Michael Rooker) breaks into Keller's apartment and threatens him with a gun. He makes Keller lie on his bed and show him how he made love to Helen, just as he had done with his ex-wife's other three boyfriends. Keller overpowers Terry and tries to call the police but the killer is wild and lunges at him. In the struggle, Terry is accidentally thrown through the window and plunges to his death.

Keller and Helen are reunited. She forgives him and they resume their relationship.

Trivia

There is a deleted scene in the movie, not included in the DVD or VHS versions showing Keller having a brief heated exchange with his ex-wife, Denice Gruber (played by Lorraine Bracco). Interestingly, the scene is sometimes shown when the movie is broadcast on television networks.

When Frank is intoxicatied pleading with Helen in her apartment to take him back, after she leaves the room to talk to her mother he notices his name circled (along with the deceased Raymond Brown and Jim Mackie) on the page of personals ads but it is written as "Frank Kellog".
