Work

Esbjörn-Hargens has worked to establish Integral Theory as a legitimate academic field of discourse by creating two master's degrees at John F. Kennedy University based on AQAL (one in Integral Psychology and one in Integral Theory), and one at Fielding Graduate University in Organizational Management and Development. He has published over a dozen articles in various academic journals, founded the academic peer-reviewed Journal of Integral Theory and Practice, co-authoried the first academic text book application of the Integral model: Integral Ecology: Uniting Multiple Perspectives on Nature (2008); co-founded an academic conference devoted to the AQAL model; and founded the Integral Research Center which supports graduate students in doing mixed-methods research using the Integral model.

He is a practitioner of both Tibetan Buddhism (Shangpa Kagyu linage) and A. H. Almaas’ the Diamond Approach.
