Plot

For its time, Secret of the Old Cabinet was a remarkably sophisticated production -- as indeed were most of the films that emanated from Denmark's Nordisk studios. A wealthy old woman dies, leaving her will in the secret compartment of a sealed cabinet. Arthur Rogers, the present owner of the cabinet, is in love with Clara Faber, as is Cecil Hoff, the old woman's nephew and heir apparent to her fortune. While Clara tries to choose between the two men, Arthur stumbles across the secret compartment, reads the will, and discovers that he, and not Hoff, is heir to the dead woman's millions. He offers Hoff one-third of the money if he will remove himself from Clara's life, a deal to which Hoff apparently agrees. Secretly, however, Hoff arranges to have Arthur killed and the will stolen. But Hoff is hoist on his own petard in the final reel, courtesy of a spectacular automobile accident. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
