sediment cell

Geography Dictionary: sediment cell

A length of coastline, and its associated nearshore area, largely self-contained. A sediment sub-cell is a division of a sediment cell based on best available knowledge of large-scale processes within that cell.

Sediment yield is the total mass of sediment in suspension or as bedload which reaches the exit of a drainage basin. High sediment yields may reflect the discharge of the river basin but the nature of the catchment area, be it of weak or resistant rock, farmed or urban land, is also important. Analysis of the shape of sedimentary particles can provide information about their transport history and their depositional environments, and aid facies differentiation.
