‘Sehnsucht’, one of the most famous poems of J. von Eichendorff, the first line of which runs ‘Es schienen so golden die Sterne’. It unrolls a Romantic vision of a nocturnal landscape of bewitching beauty. The poem, without its title, occurs in Eichendorff's novel, Dichter und ihre Gesellen. Eichendorff wrote a second and less well-known poem with the same title (‘Selig, wer zur Kunst erlesen’).
