Biography

Known respectfully as "The Great," King Sejong had a profound effect on the linguistic evolution of Korea. The fourth king of the Choson Dynasty and the first to be influenced from birth by Confucianism, Sejong created the Korean alphabet and a phonetic writing system that he dubbed "Hun Min Jong Um (accurate sounds to educate the people)." In addition to helping to develop musical instruments and encouraging orchestral music, he wrote numerous songs including "Yeo Min Lak (I Would Enjoy the Song With People)." ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
