What is selenium injection?
SELENIUM is a mineral that helps in protecting the cells of your body from damaging chemical reactions. It is found in foods such as meat, poultry, grains, and seafood. Selenium deficiency occurs when there is not enough selenium in the diet. Selenium deficiency is rare in the United States. Generic selenium injection is available.
What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of the following conditions:
intestinal or stomach disease
kidney disease
an unusual or allergic reaction to selenium, benzyl alcohol, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
pregnant or trying to get pregnant
breast-feeding
How should I take this medicine?
Selenium injections are for addition to intravenous feedings. It is usually added to the injection solution by a health-care professional when it is not possible for you to take selenium by mouth.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What drug(s) may interact with selenium?
Many multivitamin supplements contain selenium. Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What should I watch for while taking selenium?
Visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. Taking selenium supplements should not be a substitute for a balanced and varied diet. A good diet usually has enough selenium for your daily needs. Some foods that contain selenium include: meat, poultry, grains, and seafood. Avoid taking multivitamin supplements that contain selenium.
What side effects may I notice from taking selenium?
The recommended daily allowance of selenium does not usually cause any side effects.
Side effects related to overdose include:
diarrhea
garlic odor of breath and sweat
hair loss
irritability
metallic taste
nausea, vomiting
unusual tiredness
Where can I keep my medicine?
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
