Semiotics (the science of signs and the study of how signs work) has been perceived as of major significance in architecture, for the built environment may be seen as a communicating system of signs and symbols. The school of thought that recognizes contemporary signs and symbols in design has been termed the Semiological or Semiotic School, and its protagonists include Sert and Venturi. It was influenced by Semper.
