Review

Haitian compas musicians Djakout Mizik came into the new millennium with Septieme Ciel, an album that showed them moving into a mid-tempo groove. Revolving around Haitian music vet Tony Baptiste, the band is very passionate and displays an enthusiasm that many bands in this genre simply cannot muster. Some listeners may fret at the front cover, which shows the band towering over New York City and reaching for the World Trade Center. But, rest assured, this was before September 11, 2001, and there was no malicious intent meant by the cover. Fans of Haitian music should give this a listen, as the band is a wonderful, energetic bunch that really shines on this album. This genre may not be that popular in the United States, but this is an excellent example of the kind of compas crafted on its shores. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
