Review

Though the years have deadened its impact somewhat, there is still a visceral thrill to be drawn from replaying the first Love and Rockets album, a sense of the first step taken towards a brave new world, and a miasmic whirl of psychedelic intent that masks intents even darker than the preceding Bauhaus ever envisioned. Recorded and released in 1985, riding to club acclaim on the back of the "Ball of Confusion" remake, and aligning its makers with a destiny and fame that no one could ever have predicted, Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven ranks among the most deceptive debut albums of the 1980s. The keys to the album remain the same, of course -- the churning guitar soup of "The Dog-End of a Day Gone By," the sibilant glam sexuality of the title track, the chilling nursery rhyme pendulum of "The Game." But the opiate atmosphere that chokes the wide open spaces leavened within every song only thickens by the time you hit the closing acoustics of "Saudade," and Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven emerges as profound an experience as any of the lauded trips of the original psychedelic era. Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven is the debut album by the British band Love and Rockets, released in 1985 on Beggar's Banquet.

Although the previous band that all three members had been a part of, Bauhaus, is recognized as one of the first gothic rock bands, Love and Rockets started with a rather psychedelic sound, and a clear glam rock influence.

The album's original UK LP, Canada LP, UK CD, and US CD all featured slightly different tracklists. In 2001, the album was remastered and expanded to include additional single mixes and b-sides, many of which had appeared on various versions of the original album. The USA mix of "Ball of Confusion" could not be fit on the CD, and was thus appended to the expanded remaster of Love and Rockets' second album, Express.

The Canadian LP release also included "Ball of Confusion". The UK CD release included the US mix of "Ball of Confusion" and "God and Mr. Smith" (mislabeled as the Mars Mix), and replaced "If There's a Heaven Above" with the Canada Mix of the same song. The US CD release included "God and Mr. Smith" and "Inside the Outside", and replaced "The Dog-End of a Day Gone By" with a remix of the song (which was not included on the 2001 reissue).
