Plot

A middle-aged man and his son are both bedeviled by women in this drama from Egypt. Hanan (Laila Eloui) is a former prostitute who has given up life in the brothel and is trying to start over again. Hanan moves to Cairo, and one evening attends a performance by a group of dervishes; she is fascinated by one of the dancers, Bakr (Farouk al-Fishawi), who is in turn attracted to her. Bakr has been on his own since his wife Tawhida (Sawsan Badr) left him after frequent false accusations of infidelity, and he has few confidents outside of his son Saad (Sherif Ramzy), who is in his early twenties and worships his dad. Saad introduces Bakr to Hanan, and a love affair begins between the two, but she isn't sure how (or if) she should tell him about her checkered past. Meanwhile, Saad has trouble dealing with his mother's new life as a free woman, and learns that his girlfriend has been unfaithful to him; he turns to his father for support, but Hanan now occupies more of Bark's time than his son. Alwan Al-Sama Al-Sabaa (aka Seventh Heaven) was screened at the 2007 Cairo Film Festival as part of a program of new Arab cinema. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
