SexTV: The Channel is a Canadian English language category 2 digital cable specialty channel presenting programming on sex and human sexuality including issues on love, dating, romance and related subjects. The channel is now owned by Corus Entertainment. The channel borrowed its name from the former Citytv original program, SexTV.
History
In June 2001, CHUM Limited was given approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to launch a national category 2 specialty channel known as Relationship Television, a chanel described as being "devoted exclusively to programming related to love, romance, marriage, relationship-themed game shows, sexuality and gender issues, family planning, relationship breakdown and magazine style programming featuring romantic vacation resorts.".[1]
The channel was launched only 3 months later, on September 7, 2001, under the name SexTV: The Channel; a channel fashioned after and its name derived from the now former Citytv program, SexTV; Citytv being a CHUM property at the time.
In July 2006, Bell Globemedia announced that it would purchase CHUM for an estimated $1.7 billion CAD, included in the sale was SexTV: The Channel.[2] The sale was subject to CRTC approval and was approved in June 2007,[3] with the transaction completed on June 22, 2007.
On July 14, 2009, CTVglobemedia (formerly Bell Globemedia) announced the sale of SexTV: The Channel, along with Drive-In Classics, to Corus Entertainment for $40 million CAD.[4] The sale was approved by the CRTC on November 19.[5] In late September, Corus announced that the channel would rebranded as "W Movies" on March 1, 2010, which will be a film-focused sister channel of W Network.[6]
