  1. The elimination of competing businesses or products in a particular field.
  2. A decline in the values of certain securities that usually results in a depressed stock market.

change in market conditions that results in the elimination of marginally financed participants in an industry. For example, if the market for microcomputers suddenly becomes glutted because there is more supply than demand, a shakeout will result, meaning that companies will fall by the wayside. In the securities markets, a shakeout occurs when speculators are forced by market events to sell their positions, usually at a loss.
