Shaolin Chamber of Death (Shao Lin mu ren xiang) is a 1976 Hong Kong action film, directed by Chen Chi-Hwa. It was made at Lo Wei's studio at Golden Harvest, during the post-Bruce Lee era. During this time Hong Kong film producers, including Lo, tried in vain to find "the next Bruce Lee".
The film was also released internationally under several alternative titles, including:
- "36 Wooden Men"
- "Shaolin Chamber of Death" (initial UK releases)
- "Shaolin Wooden Men" (USA, later UK release)
- "Shaolin Wooden Men - Young Tiger's Revenge" (USA)
- "Wooden Man" (Germany)
Plot
Lei Cao / Little Mute (Jackie Chan) is a Shaolin student undergoing rigorous training in order to avenge the death of his father. He earned his nickname because he ceased speaking the day his father was killed. He is trained by two teachers with contrasting styles - the first is a female Shaolin monk, who teaches him the graceful technique of the Gliding Snake. The second is a prisoner at the monastery, who secretly teaches Lei Cao the powerful Roaring Lion technique. To complete his training, Lei Cao is given the ultimate task of fighting his way through a series of mechanical training dummies. Using the unique combination of styles that he's learned, he successfully passes through the chamber. Upon doing so, however, he learns that the prisoner has escaped and is terrorising the monastery, and what's more, he may have been responsible for the death of Lei Cao's father.
Trivia
The training dummies in this film are the inspiration for the character Mokujin in the Tekken series. They also make an appearance in the manga of Negima.
