Plot

A very large shark has been terrorizing the workers trying to install an underwater cable of the coast of Mexico, so a resort security diver, Ben (John Barrowman), takes it upon himself to put a stop to the killing. However, a tooth he finds is identified by researcher Cat Stone (Jennifer McShane) to be from not a shark, but a prehistoric megalodon, thought to be extinct for 24 million years. With a crew of victims -- er, sailors -- they set out to hunt the beast. But little do they know, the big shark attacking their boat and eating their crewmembers are the babies, and their mother is really, really big -- and angry. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide

Review

Not to spoil it for anyone, but when the monster megalodon finally emerges in the last reel of this briskly paced, utterly predictable (seen Jaws, anyone) throwaway, you have to howl at its enormity. It gulps a life raft with seven people on it, making the limb-chewing killer whites in previous movies look like guppies. The special effects are so-so, but they get the idea across. The gratuitous nudity is hilariously gratuitous, the acting is arch, and the music is stolen so blatantly from you-know-what (da-duh, da-duh) that John Williams should get a commission. That said, it's not bad for a knowingly nutty B-movie. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide

Plot

Ben Carpenter (John Barrowman) and his co-worker Esai skip out on work with him to go scuba diving for lobster. During his dive, Ben pries a large tooth out of an underwater fiber optic cable. Two divers from the company confront him and they surface. They chastise him for being near the cable, and he tells them about the tooth. Later, Ben tries to identify the shark from the tooth, emailing a picture of it to a research center. That night, Cat Stone (Jennifer McShane) views the photo and quickly heads to Mexico. She initially tells Ben that it was from a normal shark, then calls in a film crew because she recognized the tooth as coming from a Megalodon, a prehistoric shark long believed to be extinct. Her crew, Davis (Nikolai Sortirov) and Friedman (Atanas Srebrev), arrive quickly to document the shark.

When the shark eats a para-sailing group, Cat feels responsible for the killings and tells Ben everything she knows. Meanwhile, Chuck, an ex-navy submariner who works for Apex, discovers that the company knew about the sharks and had lost several men while installing the cables. Enraged, he confronts the CEO Mr. Tolley and is fired, after being assured that no one would believe him. He joins with Ben and Cat. They come up with an idea to attach a homing device to the shark so that a Mark 44 torpedo can lock on to it. However, Cat still wants to study it rather than kill it.

The shark attacks the research vessel and ends up trapping Ben and Cat in the boat's cabin. Cat is able to grab a nearby shotgun and kill the shark. However, they learn that the shark they killed was only a baby. Its mother, a much larger Megalodon arrives and capsizes the boat. It eats Esai and his motorboat in one bite, and later eats Davis and Friedman. Ben goes to his boss, but he refuses to tell the public about the problem so Ben quits. Unable to find help and with Cat now ready to kill the shark, they decide to go to the torpedo method using Chuck's mini-sub.

Meanwhile, the trans-pacific fiber optic cable network is complete and Tolly decides to celebrate by having a yacht party. The Megalodon attacks the boat, knocking many people into the water. Some try to escape on inflatable rafts, but the shark eats the whole boat. Tolly finds a jet ski and tries to leave, but he ends up driving straight into the shark's mouth. Chuck, Ben, and Cat arrive, but Cat is unable to successfully attach the homing device with a cross bow. Chuck puts on his scuba gear and leaves the sub to attach it manually. However, after it is confirmed to be in place, it falls off. Realizing the sub is the only other thing the torpedo can lock onto, Ben adjusts its settings and waits for the shark to bite on it. He fires the torpedo and quickly escapes through the main hatch. The torpedo hits the shark, blowing it up. The shock wave knocks Ben unconscious, but Cat and Chuck are able to retrieve him. As they celebrate their victory, another Megalodon is shown swimming in another part of the ocean.

Reception

The movie was received poorly, widely panned as derivative and low budget. Scott Weinberg of efilmcritic.com stated "...Shark Attack 3 is simply inept in every way."[1] A DVD Verdict reviewer took issue with the bad dialogue..[2]
